Name Change Procedure in India

There are many reasons why someone might want to change their name. Whether you've recently been married, divorced, or simply want to start fresh, the process of changing your name in India is relatively straightforward. Here's everything you need to know about how to name change procedure in India.

1. Gazette Notification

The first step in changing your name in India is to print a notice in the Gazette of India, which is a publication of the Government of India that contains official announcements and notifications. Your Gazette notice must include your old name, your new name, the reason for the change, and your address. Once the notice has been published, you can then proceed with legally changing your name.

2. Amend Your PAN Card

Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is a document issued by the Income Tax Department that serves as proof of identity for tax purposes. You will need to update your PAN card with your new name by submitting an application form along with a copy of your gazette notification and supporting documents.

3. Change Your Passport

If you have a passport in your old name, you'll need to get it changed to reflect your new name. You can do this by scheduling an appointment at a passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and submitting the required documents, which include a copy of your gazette notification, proof of identity and address, and two photographs. Once your documents have been reviewed and approved, you'll be issued a new passport in your new name.

4. Update Your Bank Accounts

You'll also need to update your bank accounts and other financial documents with your new name. This usually involves filling out a form and providing supporting documents like a copy of your gazette notification or new passport. Once your documents have been processed, your accounts will be updated with your new name.
